In a surprising incident in Chennai, Bharathy Singaravel, a journalist with The News Minute, was denied a house rental because a fellow bachelor tenant objected to living next to a single woman. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges single women face in finding accommodation in the city.
Bharathy shared her experience on Twitter while searching for a house in Chennai. She explained, “I almost finalized a place today, met the landlord, and everything was set. However, an advocate renting on the same floor argued with the landlord, saying he’s a bachelor and questioned how he could allow a single woman to live next door. He suggested bringing in a family instead.”
She continued, “Since he’s an advocate, the landlord got scared and decided to rent only to families. This city’s obsession with renting only to families makes it very hard for single women like me to find a place. And now, my search starts all over again.”
Expressing her frustration, Bharathy added, “It’s acceptable for a bachelor to rent a place for himself, but apparently not for a woman to do the same next to him. The audacity of the advocate to pressure the landlord, and the landlord’s fear of him, is exhausting.”
Bharathy concluded her tweet by asking for help, “Anyway, I’m still looking for a house. Please DM me leads. My budget is 12-13K, max 15K. No restrictions, and please only if they’re not looking for family renters. I’m a single renter and plan to stay that way. Flat share leads are also welcome.”
Since Bharathy shared this incident on May 22, 2020, her tweets have been widely shared, highlighting the bias and challenges faced by single women renters in Chennai.
