Gujarat High Court Ends Marriage Over CCTV and Bathroom Microphone, Orders Rs 1 Lakh Monthly Alimony
The Gujarat High Court has dissolved a marriage, citing cruelty, after shocking revelations that a husband installed CCTV cameras in every room and even placed microphones inside the bathrooms.
The case involved a school teacher from Ahmedabad who married a Mumbai-based pilot in May 2003. This was the pilot’s second marriage, as his first wife had died by suicide, leaving behind a son. The woman agreed to marry him on the condition that she would not have children of her own and would instead take care of his son.
However, their relationship soon turned bitter. Despite owning three houses in Mumbai, the pilot shifted to a rented flat, where he installed surveillance cameras throughout the house. The wife alleged this was an act of cruelty, and disputes escalated to the police. The husband admitted to the installations but argued they were for safety purposes — a claim the court rejected.
The situation worsened when the wife went on a hunger strike, leading the husband to lodge a police complaint. Their cohabitation lasted only two years before the wife returned to Ahmedabad in July 2015, where she has lived since.
While the husband filed for divorce, the wife moved the court seeking restitution of conjugal rights. The family court initially rejected the divorce petition, citing the wife’s sacrifice in agreeing not to have children of her own. The matter then reached the Gujarat High Court.
A bench of Justice A.Y. Kogje and Justice N.S. Sanjay Gowda observed:
“Continuation of this marriage would only perpetuate cruelty upon both. Installing CCTV cameras in all rooms and microphones in bathrooms clearly shows that normal marital life between them is impossible.”
The court concluded that the marriage was “beyond repair” due to the prolonged separation, multiple litigations, and hostility between the parties. The husband has been directed to pay Rs 1 lakh monthly alimony to his wife.
