Delhi Woman Kills 86-Year-Old Mother-in-Law with Frying Pan and Pressure Cooker

In a shocking and disturbing case from Delhi, a 48-year-old woman, Sharmishtha Som, was arrested for killing her 86-year-old bedridden mother-in-law, Hashi Som, on April 28. She used a frying pan and a pressure cooker to hit the elderly woman multiple times on her head and face, causing 14 serious injuries.

According to the police, Sharmishtha was frustrated with taking care of her mother-in-law. Her marriage had also suffered due to constant arguments about the responsibility of caregiving. She decided to kill her mother-in-law and tried to fake it as an accidental fall.

However, the post-mortem report and footage from a CCTV camera in the room revealed the truth. The camera was placed by her husband, Surjeet Som, on the bedside table to monitor his mother’s condition while he was at work.

The tragic incident took place in Swastik Residency, Neb Sarai. Although Hashi originally lived in Kolkata, she was brought to Delhi by her son in March last year because she needed full-time care. After conflicts with Sharmishtha, she was moved to a separate rented room across the street in October.

On the day of the murder, Surjeet was busy with work and did not check the CCTV feed. When he returned home, he found his mother dead. His 16-year-old daughter told police that her mother and grandmother did not get along.

Though the camera’s video storage was initially missing, Surjeet later gave the memory card to the police. The footage from 10:30 AM on April 28 showed Sharmishtha entering the flat with a pressure cooker and frying pan. Screams and sounds of blows could be heard, and later, she was seen cleaning the utensils.

A police officer confirmed that the autopsy revealed 14 injuries. The cause of death was haemorrhagic shock due to blunt force trauma to the head and limbs.

Sharmishtha has been arrested and a case of murder has been registered. The police have confirmed that her husband was not involved in the crime.
