Guwahati, Assam – Well-known psychiatrists Dr. Sangeeta Dutta and her husband Dr. Waliul Islam have been detained by the police for allegedly assaulting their minor daughter. The incident took place at their residence in Manipuri Basti, Guwahati.
The couple, both respected medical professionals in Guwahati, came under police scrutiny after a neighbor reported the alleged abuse. According to reports, the child was often subjected to physical punishment, including being tied up on the rooftop of their apartment building.
Child rights activist Miguel Das Queah, who heads the NGO UTSAH, stated that although there had been previous complaints, there was no solid proof until now. “We’ve been hearing things, but this time a neighbor had the courage to step forward,” he said.
Sources claim that the 5-year-old girl had visible bruise marks on her body, suggesting frequent physical abuse. There is confusion surrounding the child’s background. The couple initially said she was adopted, then later claimed she was born through IVF procedures. Some suspect the child might have come from Dr. Islam’s earlier marriage.
Queah praised the neighbor who took the initiative to report the matter to the police, calling it a step in the right direction for child safety.
However, Dr. Sangeeta Dutta, in a video statement, denied all accusations, calling them a conspiracy against her and her family.
The police are currently investigating the case, and child rights organizations are keeping a close watch.
