A 23-year-old man, held in Surat Central Jail for allegedly kidnapping and raping his minor girlfriend, died by suicide on Wednesday. He reportedly hanged himself inside his jail barrack using a bedsheet around 2:30 am.
The deceased, originally from Aurangabad in Maharashtra and living in Adajan, Surat, left a suicide note in Marathi. The note hinted that the cause of his death was related to a love relationship, according to Inspector R.R. Desai from Sachin Police Station.
As per police reports, the man had eloped with the girl last year intending to marry her. Her parents, who did not approve of the relationship, filed a missing person complaint. The police later traced the couple to Aurangabad, returned the girl to her parents, and registered a case of kidnapping and rape based on the complaint filed by her father.
After his death, police sent his body to New Civil Hospital for postmortem before handing it over to his family.
“We have reviewed CCTV footage from the barrack. It confirms that he died by suicide,” said Inspector Desai. He added that the police are continuing to gather more information related to the case.
