Allahabad: The Allahabad High Court recently said that it is difficult for women to live alone after a live-in relationship ends, as Indian society still does not fully accept such relationships.
This observation came on February 14 while the Court was hearing a bail application by a man named Aditya Raj Verma, who was accused of not marrying a woman after being in a live-in relationship with her.
The single-judge bench of Justice Siddharth noted that when such relationships end badly, women are often left with no choice but to file a police complaint against their partners.
“This is one case where the negative effects of a live-in relationship are clearly visible. Women face social and emotional challenges after such breakups,” the Court stated.
The woman in the case had earlier been married and had two children. She later moved in with Aditya and became pregnant during their relationship. However, when Aditya refused to marry her, she filed a police complaint.
She also accused him of sending her private pictures to her ex-husband, which led to further issues. Aditya was booked under IPC Sections 376 (rape) and 406 (criminal breach of trust).
His lawyer argued that the woman was an adult and had willingly entered into the live-in relationship. He said there was no evidence that the relationship began with a promise of marriage, and that Aditya had no past criminal record. He had been in jail since November 22.
After reviewing all facts and hearing both sides, the Court granted bail to Aditya, but also reflected on the social stigma and challenges faced by women in such situations.
