Chirag Varaiya, a Mumbai-based chartered accountant, was found dead by suicide at a resort bungalow in Igatpuri on Sunday night, just weeks after he was booked in a police case. The incident has raised concerns about the mental stress professionals face due to legal and personal pressures.
According to the Igatpuri police, Varaiya had been named in an FIR filed by the Bhandup police nearly three weeks ago. Investigators believe that the stress caused by the case might have led him to take this extreme step. A suicide note was found at the scene.
A police official stated,
“On Friday, Varaiya informed his employer that he needed a break over the weekend. He requested a company vehicle and driver, which were arranged. He then travelled alone to Vivaant Bungalows, a chain of luxury villas in Igatpuri.”
On Saturday, he told the driver not to disturb him and that they would return to Mumbai on Monday. However, on Monday morning, the driver knocked on his door but received no response. After finding his phone switched off, the driver alerted the police.
Officers reached the bungalow, broke open the door, and found Varaiya hanging from the ceiling fan. A suicide note written in English was recovered, in which he apologised to his family and asked his wife to take care of their children.
An official from Igatpuri police confirmed that they are currently recording statements and investigating further into the circumstances surrounding the death.
