New Delhi:
Supreme Court judge Justice S Ravindra Bhat emphasized that domestic responsibilities should be shared equally between men and women. Speaking at a conference on Women in Power & Decision Making organized by the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI), he highlighted how unequal household duties often stop women from advancing in their careers.
He pointed out that women are still underrepresented in the judiciary, despite progress. Even though the Madras High Court has the most female judges in the country, it still falls short of the desired numbers. “The glass ceiling is still real for women in many professions,” Justice Bhat said.
He added that traditional domestic roles and expectations unfairly burden women, holding them back from leadership roles and career growth. “We should not accept these burdens as natural,” he noted. “Instead, we must build a society that shares household work equally.”
Justice Bhat also spoke about the importance of real representation for women in leadership roles, not just symbolic or token positions. He warned that giving women roles without actual decision-making power harms real progress, as it creates an illusion of equality.
He acknowledged the increase in the number of women joining the legal field, especially in litigation, and said the focus should now shift to creating supportive work environments that help women stay and grow in their careers.
“It starts with small but meaningful changes,” he said. “Leaders and institutions must recognize the unique challenges women face and actively work to remove them.”
