Olympic-Bound Athlete Ends Life After Being Falsely Accused of Rape
A young athlete named Rahul from Bhaisi village in Muzaffarpur district, Bihar, died by suicide on Monday after being falsely accused of rape. Rahul, who was preparing for the Olympics, was found hanging from a tree near his home.
The police recovered a suicide note from his pocket. In the letter, Rahul said he was falsely implicated in a rape case, which led to 19 months of jail time and severe depression. He wrote that this false accusation had destroyed his life, career, and dreams.
Rahul mentioned in his note that he had done nothing wrong. He said the girl was only his friend, and he had only helped her in finding a job. Despite this, her family accused him of luring and raping her, allegedly for money. The case was filed while Rahul was living in Delhi, where he was training for the Olympics. Delhi Police arrested him from his village based on the complaint.
After spending 19 months in jail, Rahul was released on bail just a month ago. However, the mental and emotional toll of the incident had left him shattered. He wrote that he could no longer apply for any government jobs and had become socially isolated due to the stigma.
In his note, Rahul apologized to his parents and explained that he was ending his life out of his own free will, not because of his family. He said, “I won medals in national and international competitions, but now my life is ruined. I didn’t commit rape. The girl herself admitted that nothing happened. Then why was I punished?”
The local police have sent the body for post-mortem and confirmed that an investigation is underway. They stated that legal action will be taken based on the contents of the suicide note.
This tragic case has raised serious questions about the mental health impact of false accusations and the lack of support for those wrongfully accused.
