20-Year-Old DU Student Abducted and Killed in UP Over Alleged Relationship
A 20-year-old Delhi University student, Himanshu Sharma, was allegedly kidnapped from outside his home in northeast Delhi and killed in Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh, on Saturday. He was a second-year BA student at DU’s School of Open Learning.
According to the police, Himanshu was abducted by members of a girl’s family. They accused him of sexually assaulting and blackmailing their 19-year-old daughter. However, Himanshu’s mother strongly denied these claims.
Rajni Sharma, his mother, said, “These allegations are false. There was no girl involved. On Saturday, Himanshu received a call from the girl’s number and left home. Soon after, four to five of her family members took him to Baghpat and killed him.”
Police have registered an FIR against seven people, including the girl’s mother. So far, two arrests have been made, confirmed Baghpat Kotwali circle officer Harish Bhadauria.
Rajni, a single mother, raised Himanshu and his younger sister alone after her husband left them 12 years ago. She runs a small grocery shop and also stitches clothes to support her family in New Usmanpur, northeast Delhi.
She recalled that Himanshu told her he was going to a birthday party. Around 5 PM, she felt something was wrong and tried calling him, but his phone was off. By 10 PM, she alerted her relatives. Then, a neighbor, whose son had called Himanshu, informed her that he had been kidnapped.
The neighbor even made a video call to someone who showed Himanshu being held captive. “They said they would kill my son,” Rajni said tearfully.
The neighbor then took her to a forested area in Baghpat. There, Rajni saw a car with a Delhi number plate and found her son inside, covered in blood. She was trying to get him to a hospital when a police van arrived and arrested two of the accused.
When asked about the alleged relationship, the Sharma family said they had no knowledge of Himanshu dating anyone. Rajni, grieving, said, “Our dreams have been destroyed. If they had a problem, they could have spoken to me. Why did they have to kill my son?”
