In an unusual case from Haridwar, Uttarakhand, an elderly couple has taken their son and daughter-in-law to court, demanding either a grandchild within a year or ₹5 crore in compensation.
The couple claims they spent all their savings on their son’s education, even taking a loan to build their house, and are now facing severe financial difficulties. In their petition, they demanded ₹2.5 crore each from their son and daughter-in-law if they fail to provide a grandchild.
Prasad, the father, explained, “We invested everything in our son’s future, including sending him to America for training. Now, we are financially and emotionally burdened. This is why we are asking for a grandchild or compensation.”
The couple’s lawyer, Advocate A.K. Srivastava, emphasized that this case reflects the realities of modern society. He stated, “Parents often sacrifice their financial stability to provide for their children. In return, they expect care and support. This case highlights the growing disconnect in families today.”
The elderly couple added that their son and daughter-in-law, who married in 2016, have not fulfilled their hope of having grandchildren. They clarified that their demand is not based on gender but solely on their desire to have a grandchild.
This legal battle sheds light on the challenges faced by parents who feel neglected despite making significant sacrifices for their children.
