21-Year-Old Student Dies by Suicide After Alleged Police Harassment in Delhi

A 21-year-old university student in Delhi, Suraj Thakur, tragically died by suicide after allegedly being harassed by the police in connection with a robbery investigation. Thakur, who lived in West Delhi’s Hari Nagar area, was found hanging in his home just hours after being questioned by police about a phone-snatching case involving his friends.

According to Neeraj, Thakur’s 18-year-old brother, the police detained Suraj, took his phone without informing the family, and subjected him to threats and torture during the questioning. Neeraj added that upon being released, Suraj went straight to his room and ended his life.

In a video shared online by his family, Suraj Thakur said, “I didn’t do anything wrong. I am innocent. My parents’ reputation is at stake. I am depressed. I am committing suicide, and I am responsible for this. No one else is to blame.”

Thakur also mentioned in the video that he had been “harassed” by the police.

The Delhi police have denied the accusations, stating that they only called Thakur in for questioning before releasing him. An investigation into the incident is currently underway, and authorities have assured that “appropriate legal action” will be taken, according to DCP Gautam.

Suraj Thakur is survived by his mother, a housewife; his father, who works as a laborer; his brother Neeraj; and another sibling.
