Unmarried Woman, 20, Throws Newborn from Washroom Window Due to Fear of Social Stigma, Charged with Murder

A 20-year-old unmarried woman in Delhi has been charged with murder after allegedly throwing her newborn baby out of her apartment’s washroom window. The incident occurred on January 9, 2023, at Jai Ambey Apartments in New Ashok Nagar. The woman, who works in the private sector in Noida, reportedly told the police that she attempted to “get rid of” the baby out of fear of social stigma.

Delhi Police received a report about a newborn baby who had fallen from a height. Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Yudhvir was dispatched to the scene and learned that the baby had been rushed to Metro Hospital in Noida by concerned bystanders. Unfortunately, the doctors declared the infant dead upon arrival.

Police began a thorough investigation, searching nearby homes for clues. During this search, blood traces were found in a dustbin at one of the residences. When questioned, the woman living in the house broke down and confessed to giving birth to the baby boy and throwing him out of the washroom window.

The accused was taken to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital for a medical examination, where she revealed that her actions were motivated by the fear of being judged by society due to her unmarried status. The police have registered an FIR under Sections 302 (murder) and 201 (causing the disappearance of evidence) of the Indian Penal Code.
