A 47-year-old assistant professor of Mathematics at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati was found hanging in his campus quarters on Friday. The police suspect it to be a case of suicide.
Kamrup district Superintendent of Police, Hitesh Ch. Roy, confirmed that the body was discovered inside a locked room on Friday evening. “We believe he may have died two or three days ago. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination,” Roy said.
According to the police, they were alerted by the IIT-Guwahati administration when a foul smell began coming from faculty quarter D 022. The room had been locked, raising concern among the staff.
Preliminary evidence suggests suicide, but authorities have stated that the investigation is ongoing and they are working to determine the exact cause of death.
The deceased professor has been identified as Kamal, the son of Ismatullah Ansari, a resident of Paschim Vihar, New Delhi.
IIT-Guwahati issued a statement following the incident, offering their condolences to the professor’s family. The institute said they are cooperating fully with the police investigation and have also launched an internal inquiry to understand the circumstances that led to the tragedy.
