A family dispute escalated when a daughter-in-law forcibly re-entered her marital home after a settlement agreement of Rs 13 lakh allegedly fell through. The father-in-law explained, “My son got married on October 31, 2017, but his wife left us on February 20, 2018. After returning to her parents’ home, she filed three cases against us under Section 498A, the Domestic Violence Act, and for maintenance. At one point, her mother agreed to a Rs 13 lakh settlement, and I had prepared two cheques of Rs 6.5 lakh each to be handed over in court. However, her mother then demanded an additional Rs 20,000, causing the agreement to fall apart. Their demands keep increasing. Now, they want us to sell our house and give her one-fifth of the proceeds. If we sell, where will we live?”
He continued, “On February 28, 2021, after three years of living with her mother, our daughter-in-law came and sat outside our home. When I went to the market, she began throwing stones, threatened us, and forced her way inside. Since then, she has locked herself in with my wife and daughter, while my son and I are staying elsewhere to avoid new false cases. I am living with my elder brother, and my son has rented a place.”
The father-in-law added, “We have been asking the police for help for 18 days, but no one has come to our aid. If I confront her, she will likely accuse me of more false charges. She leaves the water tanks open, then accuses us of harassment when the water runs out. I have only sent my sister with food for my wife and daughter once, and even then, my daughter-in-law recorded videos to use against us. If she wants to return, it should be through a court order, not by force.”
Neighbors have spoken in defense of the in-laws, stating, “These are false accusations. This family has lived here for 30 years, and we have never heard them raise their voices. This is about money. Both the husband and wife are good people, and we know them well. The woman left because she claimed her husband was physically unfit. She also took money before the marriage and contributed very little to the wedding, yet now demands over Rs 13 lakh.”
When questioned about the Rs 13 lakh demand, the daughter-in-law’s mother claimed the husband was impotent. She said her daughter had informed her in-laws, who then suggested the couple remain friends and adopt a child. “Why can’t they get their son treated?” she asked. Initially, she agreed to the Rs 13 lakh settlement but wanted to account for household items given during the marriage. Later, she changed her stance, insisting her daughter should live with her in-laws. When asked why she wanted her daughter to stay with an allegedly unfit man, she replied, “He should get medical treatment.”
