An athlete preparing for the Olympics in Muzaffarpur district tragically took his own life on Monday after being falsely accused of rape. The young man, identified as Rahul from Bhaisi village, was found hanging from a tree. A suicide note was discovered in his pocket, which the police have now taken as evidence. The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination.
In his suicide note, Rahul denied the rape allegations, stating that the false accusations had led him into deep depression. The note revealed that he had decided to end his life because of the unbearable stress these accusations had caused. Rahul had already spent 19 months in jail due to these charges.
In the note, Rahul expressed that his life had become meaningless since he was jailed for a crime he did not commit. He said that the girl involved was only his friend, and he had contacted her to help her find a job. However, her parents accused him of luring her away and raping her. Rahul mentioned that after spending 19 months in jail, he had fallen into severe depression and felt his chances of securing a government job were ruined. He apologized to his family, stating that his actions were not their fault and that he was taking this step on his own accord.
Rahul also claimed that the girl’s family had falsely accused him for financial gain. He wrote, “Father, forgive me… I had dreams of becoming a great athlete. I worked hard and won many medals both in the country and abroad, but my life has been ruined. I did not commit rape. Even the girl said that nothing happened, so why was I punished? I can’t live with this stigma. Everyone thinks wrongly of me, and I can’t talk to anyone. That’s why I am ending my life.”
Rahul had been battling depression for the past 20 months. Despite his achievements in athletics, having won medals in various competitions nationally and internationally, his life took a dark turn. He was training for the Olympics in Delhi when the girl’s family filed the rape charges against him, leading to his arrest by the Delhi Police from his village. After spending about 19 months in jail, Rahul was released on bail just a month ago.
The police have stated that they are investigating the case and will take appropriate legal action based on the findings from the suicide note.
