On April 15, a 24-year-old man named Simranjit Singh tragically committed suicide by consuming poison in Patiala. According to the police, Simranjit was driven to this extreme step due to ongoing harassment from his in-laws.
Simranjit Singh, a resident of Kanera Mohalla Tawakli Mod in Patiala, had a love marriage with Jasmeet Kaur, who lived in Khalsa Mohalla, Patiala. However, soon after their marriage, Jasmeet’s parents, Ravinder Kaur and Harmeet Singh, took her back to their home and began demanding Rs 70 lakh in exchange for agreeing to a divorce. They also pressured Simranjit to transfer his property to their daughter.
Unable to cope with the harassment, Simranjit moved to live with his cousin Harpal Singh in Ratan Nagar, Patiala. On April 13, he confided in Harpal over the phone, expressing his distress and mentioning his desire to commit suicide due to his father-in-law’s constant harassment. Although Harpal tried to dissuade him, Simranjit took his own life early in the morning by consuming poison.
When Simranjit’s family arrived at the scene, they found a suicide note in his hand, detailing the harassment he had faced from his in-laws. Despite the police naming the accused mother-in-law and father-in-law, no arrests have been made yet.
This tragic incident underscores the devastating impact of family pressure and harassment, and it.
