During a virtual event celebrating International Women’s Day, Chief Justice of India (CJI) N.V. Ramana emphasized the need to prioritize the appointment of women as panel advocates to enhance their visibility in the legal profession. He expressed concern that many talented women lawyers leave the legal field due to societal pressures and stressed the importance of creating an environment that supports women in pursuing law as a career.
CJI Ramana highlighted a striking gender imbalance within the legal profession, noting that out of nearly 17 lakh lawyers in India, only 15% are women. He has been actively working to address this disparity and pointed out that out of the nine recent vacancies at the Supreme Court, three were filled by women judges.
The CJI also emphasized that the inclusion of women in the judiciary is not just a symbolic gesture but a crucial necessity, as women bring unique perspectives to the interpretation and application of the law.
In a powerful statement, CJI Ramana remarked, “If giving women their due share is considered a revolution, then I am proud to be called a revolutionary.”
