In a shocking incident, a 22-year-old woman in Andhra Pradesh, engaged to Ramanaidu in a family-arranged match, allegedly slit his throat after calling him to a surprise date. She took him to an isolated spot near her hometown in Anakapalle district. Ramanaidu, who bled heavily, was admitted to a hospital and is now recovering. The incident happened near Kommalapudi village of Butchayyapeta mandal in Anakapalle district. The police have charged the woman under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), arrested her, and sent her to judicial remand.
During the preliminary investigation, the woman admitted to the crime, stating that she attacked him because she did not want to get married. “She said she wanted to remain single, like women who live in ashrams and dedicate their lives to god. She wanted to live peacefully and didn’t want to get married. She didn’t know what else to do,” explained DSP (Deputy Superintendent of Police) Sunil Kumar. He added that the woman was afraid to express her reluctance about the wedding to Ramanaidu or her parents, fearing their reaction, and resorted to attacking him. “She was depressed after the incident, as she didn’t foresee the consequences,” the DSP added.
Twenty-eight-year-old Ramanaidu, a research scholar at the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) in Hyderabad, is from Visakhapatnam district. He got engaged to the woman on April 4. The woman bought a knife on their way to the hilltop next to Vishwa Santhi Jyothirmayi Ashram near Kommalapudi, where she allegedly slit his throat. Ramanaidu tied a dupatta around the injury while the woman cried, expressing her fear of marriage and having suicidal thoughts. Despite his injury, Ramanaidu took the woman on his scooter but stopped midway due to dizziness from the bleeding. Passersby noticed and took him to the hospital, the DSP said.
Ramanaidu said he called 108 for help but couldn’t describe his location properly due to unfamiliarity with the area. He then called his relatives and started to go down the hill before passersby helped him. The doctor at the hospital stated there were no deep cuts, but the severed superficial veins caused severe bleeding.
