Journalist Bharathy Singaravel recently faced a bizarre housing discrimination case in Chennai. She was denied a house because a fellow tenant, a bachelor, was uncomfortable living next to a single woman. Bharathy shared her experience on Twitter while searching for a house in Chennai.
She wrote, “So I nearly found a place today. Met the landlord, everything was set. But then, an advocate renting on the same floor fought with the landlord, saying he’s a bachelor and uncomfortable with a single woman living next door. He demanded a family move in instead.”
Due to the advocate’s insistence and the landlord’s fear of confrontation, the landlord decided to only rent to families. Bharathy expressed her frustration over Chennai’s preference for renting to families and the low acceptance rate for single women renters.
“It’s acceptable for a bachelor to rent a place, but apparently not for a single woman. The landlord’s fear of the advocate’s demand is exhausting,” she added.
She continued her search and asked for help, “Still looking for a house. Please DM leads. Budget: 12-13K, max 15K. No family-only rentals, please. I’m a single renter and intend to stay that way. Flat share leads are also welcome.”
Since posting her ordeal on May 22, 2020, Bharathy’s tweets have been widely shared, sparking a conversation about housing discrimination and biases faced by single women in the rental market.
