Supreme Court Justice Urges Change in Lawyer’s Approach: No More ‘Tarikh Pe Tarikh’

In a recent session, Supreme Court Justice DY Chandrachud expressed dissatisfaction with the prevailing practice of seeking repeated adjournments by lawyers during hearings. Referring to the iconic dialogue “Tarikh Pe Tarikh” from the Hindi movie ‘Damini’, Justice Chandrachud emphasized the need to uphold the prestige and efficiency of the apex court.

During a hearing involving a civil appeal represented by a lawyer on behalf of a Hindu priest, the bench, comprising Justice Chandrachud and Justice Hima Kohli, declined a request for adjournment. “We do not want the Supreme Court to become a ‘Tarikh pe tarikh’ court,” Justice Chandrachud remarked sternly.

Highlighting the disparity between the judges’ meticulous preparation and the lawyers’ frequent adjournment requests, Justice Chandrachud urged for a more proactive and respectful approach towards court proceedings. “The court’s time is valuable, and we expect advocates to be prepared to argue their cases when they are scheduled,” he asserted.

The bench ultimately declined to interfere with the appeal and directed the concerned party to pursue their case in the High Court, underscoring the importance of maintaining judicial discipline and efficiency in legal proceedings.
