Delhi HC Denies Bail to Woman’s Mother and Grandmother in Assault Case
The Delhi High Court recently refused bail for a woman’s mother, Geeta, and grandmother, Kaushalya, who were accused of abducting and assaulting the woman’s husband, Raman. The incident involved extreme violence, including an attempt to mutilate Raman.
Raman had married Menka without their families’ consent. After returning to Delhi post their wedding on December 22, 2021, Menka’s family threatened Raman’s life. The couple approached Rajouri Garden Police Station for protection, but on their way back, they were attacked by Menka’s brothers and uncles and taken to Sagarpur.
According to the police, Menka’s 86-year-old grandmother, Kaushalya, urged the family to show no mercy to Raman and instructed them to chop off his private parts. Kaushalya has a history of 42 criminal cases against her. Menka’s mother, Geeta, was also accused of assault and declared a proclaimed offender early in the proceedings.
The third accused, Menka’s sister Naina Rana, was granted bail as the court found no active role attributed to her.
Justice Anoop Kumar Mendiratta highlighted that the police should act swiftly and sensitively in cases where couples marry legally and face threats to their life and liberty. He emphasized the failure of the police to protect the couple, calling the conduct of the officials at Rajouri Garden Police Station “deplorable.”
The court directed that its order be sent to the Commissioner of Police, Delhi, to ensure necessary measures are taken to sensitize police officials in handling such complaints.
