In a shocking incident, the Konanakunte police arrested a 26-year-old woman and her mother on September 4th for allegedly beating her husband to death and attempting to disguise the murder as an accident.
The accused, Shilpa, was apprehended after she transported her husband’s body in an ambulance to his native village on the outskirts of Mandya for cremation on September 2nd. Family members of the deceased noticed bruises and blood clots on the body and alerted the police.
Following a complaint, the police conducted a post-mortem, which confirmed that the death resulted from assault and torture. Shilpa was summoned to the police station for questioning. During the investigation, she confessed that she, along with her mother and a relative, had assaulted her husband, Mahesh, leading to his death.
Based on Shilpa’s confession, the police arrested her and her mother, Kempadevamma. The authorities are still searching for the relative involved in the crime.
Shilpa had been married to Mahesh, 33, for eight years, and the couple had a six-year-old son. Both worked as domestic helpers in an apartment and lived in a rented house in Goudanapalya. Investigations revealed that Mahesh had become an alcoholic and often fought with Shilpa. In response, Shilpa would enlist the help of her parents and relatives to beat Mahesh regularly, according to police reports.
A few days before the murder, Mahesh had visited his native place and shared his ordeal with his younger brother, Shivakumar. Mahesh then returned to Bengaluru to visit his son, which was the last time he was seen alive.
On Friday, Shilpa called Shivakumar to inform him that Mahesh had died from an epileptic attack, claiming he was drunk and drenched in the rain.
The mother-daughter duo has been charged under Section 302 (murder) and Section 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offense, or giving false information to screen offender) and has been remanded to judicial custody.
