In 2015, a woman trial court judge in New Delhi faced serious allegations of harassing and verbally abusing a male court staff member. The staff member, who was suffering from depression, claimed that the judge’s mistreatment included telling him to commit suicide. He filed a complaint with the district and sessions judge at Tis Hazari courts, detailing numerous instances of abuse by the metropolitan magistrate.
According to the complaint, the judge often ordered the staff member to stand in her chamber for hours, insisting that he follow all her directives. Whenever he asked her to stop abusing him, she would tell him to jump from the building and end his life. She even threatened him by mentioning a previous court staff member who had attempted suicide, suggesting he deserved the same fate.
The complaint, dated September 17, 2015, requested the transfer of the magistrate due to her continuous harassment. It also sought a personal hearing to fully explain his ordeal. The staff member stated that the judge had been abusive since his posting in 2014, using rude and filthy language both in open court and in private.
On September 16, 2015, the judge’s behavior reportedly crossed all boundaries of decency, forcing the staff member to seek medical treatment. He described feeling traumatized and unwell after being called into her chamber and subjected to demeaning language. The judge then opened a window and told him to jump and commit suicide. This incident left him so distressed that he had to visit the court dispensary.
The staff member, Mohan, also attempted to speak to two senior judges about the incident on the same day, but they had already left the court. There have been no further updates on this incident to date.
