In a shocking incident in Delhi, a woman disguised in a burqa robbed her mother’s house of gold worth Rs 15 lakh. Kamlesh, 65, from Sewak Park in Uttam Nagar, reported the burglary on January 30, stating that gold coins, necklaces, earrings, and Rs 25,000 in cash were stolen.
Upon reviewing CCTV footage, police discovered that the woman in the burqa was Shweta, Kamlesh’s elder daughter. The 31-year-old committed the theft due to jealousy towards her younger sister, Monica, believing their mother favored her and had set aside the jewelry for Monica’s upcoming wedding.
Shweta, burdened with debt including Rs 90,000 owed to her mother, carried out the theft to repay her loans. Her mother had been asking for the money back in small installments of Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000.
On January 30, Shweta took the house keys under the pretense of buying vegetables. She then went to Uttam Nagar West Metro Station, changed into a burqa in the washroom, and proceeded to her mother’s house.
Police arrested Shweta from her Mohan Garden home on Saturday. During questioning, she admitted to resenting her sister due to their mother’s favoritism and revealed her financial struggles. She also confessed to selling the stolen jewelry at a nearby shop.
The stolen items included Shweta’s own jewelry, which she had given to her mother during the Covid lockdown in 2020. Shweta had taken a loan of Rs 1.5 lakh from various people. Kamlesh, a pensioner, lost her husband, a government servant, in 1997. Monica works for an AI company in Delhi, while Shweta is a housewife and mother of a four-year-old girl. Her husband, who works at a private firm in Noida, was unaware of her intentions.
An FIR under IPC Section 380 (theft from a dwelling house) was registered in this case.
