In a recent ruling, a Delhi court has decided that a woman who is qualified and capable of earning should not depend solely on alimony from her estranged husband. District and Sessions Judge Rekha Rani stated that since the woman admitted to being more qualified and able-bodied, she should not sit idle and impose a financial burden on her husband.
The court’s observation came after the husband appealed against paying Rs 12,000 a month in support. He argued that his wife, who is an M.Sc gold medalist, was more qualified than him and had not sought employment, preferring to remain financially dependent.
The woman contended that despite her qualifications, she was married young, never worked, and had not traveled alone. However, the court supported the husband’s position, agreeing that he would pay the Rs 12,000 per month for one year. During this time, the court expects the wife to make genuine efforts to find a job.
