A 20-year-old unmarried woman has been booked for murder in Delhi after she allegedly threw her newborn baby out of a washroom window, fearing social stigma related to her pregnancy. The tragic incident took place on January 9, 2023, at Jai Ambey Apartments in New Ashok Nagar, Delhi. The woman is reported to be working in the private sector in Noida.
According to the Delhi Police, they received a call about a newborn baby found fallen from a height. Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Yudhvir was sent to the location, where he was informed that the baby had been rushed to Metro Hospital in Noida by local residents. Sadly, doctors declared the infant dead upon arrival. The baby’s medical legal certificate (MLC) was collected, and the body was shifted to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital in Delhi for further procedures.
The police began an investigation and searched several homes in the area. During this, they found blood stains in a dustbin of one of the houses. Upon questioning the residents, a young woman broke down and admitted that she had given birth in the washroom and thrown the baby out of the window in fear of being judged by society.
The woman was taken to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital for a medical examination. During questioning, she revealed that she was unmarried and felt pressured by the fear of social stigma attached to being a single mother. Out of panic, she decided to get rid of the baby.
The police have registered an FIR under Sections 302 (murder) and 201 (destruction of evidence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
This case highlights the urgent need for greater awareness, support systems, and counseling for women facing unplanned pregnancies, especially those who feel socially isolated and afraid to seek help.
