TISS Ex-Director and Family Booked for Harassment After Complaint by Daughter-in-Law
Mumbai police have registered a case against former Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) director Shalini Bharat, her husband, and her son after a complaint by her daughter-in-law, Anshumala Singh. The case, filed on September 18, includes charges under Sections 498A, 504, 506, and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Complaint and Allegations
Anshumala Singh (36), a senior manager at a public sector bank, is originally from Lucknow. She married Madhav Singh (39), who works as an assistant manager in a private company, in 2013. The wedding took place at Taj Jai Mahal Palace in Jaipur, a venue chosen at Shalini Bharat’s insistence. After marriage, Anshumala moved in with her in-laws in Govandi, Mumbai.
According to the FIR, Anshumala faced emotional neglect, as family members barely spoke to her. She also alleged that her mother-in-law pressured her to undergo medical tests when she and her husband struggled to conceive. When she suggested that her husband also get tested, her mother-in-law reportedly became angry.
She further claimed that her in-laws demanded dowry and pressured her to claim property from her mother. Due to ongoing issues, Anshumala moved out and started living separately in company-provided housing in Belapur, Navi Mumbai.
Legal Proceedings
In 2020, Madhav Singh sent Anshumala a court notice seeking a divorce, to which she responded. She stated that she delayed reporting the harassment due to the COVID-19 lockdown.
Mumbai police have begun an investigation into the case. No arrests have been made so far, and further legal proceedings will depend on the findings of the investigation.
This case highlights ongoing concerns about domestic harassment and dowry-related disputes in India.
