TISS Ex-Director, Family Booked After Daughter-in-Law Alleges Harassment

TISS Ex-Director, Family Booked After Daughter-in-Law Alleges Harassment

Former Director of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Professor Shalini Bharat, her husband, and her son have been booked by the Govandi police in Mumbai. This action follows a complaint filed by her daughter-in-law, Anshumala Singh, under sections 498A, 504, 506, and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Shalini Bharat recently stepped down from her position after a five-year term. The FIR was registered on September 18, and the police have started investigating the case.

Anshumala Singh, 36, hails from Lucknow and works as a senior manager at a public sector bank. She married Shalini Bharat’s son, Madhav Singh, 39, who is an assistant manager at a private company, in 2013. The wedding took place at Taj Jai Mahal Palace in Jaipur, a venue chosen by Shalini.

In her complaint, Anshumala stated that after her marriage, no one in the household would speak to her, as all family members were busy with their work. She claimed that due to their inability to conceive, her mother-in-law, Shalini, asked her to undergo medical tests. When Anshumala suggested her husband should also get tested after her results were normal, Shalini allegedly became angry.

Anshumala also accused her in-laws of demanding dowry and pressuring her to claim property from her mother. She eventually moved to her company’s quarters in Belapur, Navi Mumbai.

In 2020, her husband sent her a court notice for divorce, to which she responded. Anshumala mentioned that the delay in reporting the matter was due to the Covid-19 lockdown.
