Former TISS Director, Husband, and Son Booked After Daughter-in-Law Alleges Harassment

TISS Ex-Director, Husband, and Son Booked After Daughter-in-Law Files Harassment Complaint

Former Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) Director Shalini Bharat, along with her husband and son, has been booked by the Govandi Police in Mumbai after her daughter-in-law filed a complaint alleging domestic harassment and dowry demands.

The FIR was registered on September 18 under Sections 498A, 504, 506, and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Police have launched an investigation into the case.

The complainant, Anshumala Singh (36), originally from Lucknow, works as a senior manager at a public sector bank. She married Madhav Singh (39), an assistant manager at a private firm, in 2013. The wedding took place at Taj Jai Mahal Palace, Jaipur, a venue reportedly chosen by Shalini Bharat.

After marriage, Anshumala lived with her in-laws in Govandi, Mumbai. In her complaint, she alleged that the family members did not speak to her and were always busy with their own routines. When the couple faced difficulties in conceiving, her mother-in-law allegedly asked her to get medically tested. Although her results were normal, she suggested her husband undergo tests too, which reportedly angered Shalini.

Anshumala also alleged that there were demands for dowry and pressure to claim her mother’s property. Due to ongoing disputes, she eventually moved out and started living in a company-provided apartment in Belapur, Navi Mumbai.

In 2020, Madhav Singh sent her a divorce notice, which she contested. She mentioned that the delay in filing the complaint was due to the COVID-19 lockdown.
