Delhi BJP Demands Suspension of Swati Maliwal Over Alleged Eve Teasing Incident

The Delhi BJP has requested Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena to suspend Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chairperson Swati Maliwal until a police investigation into her alleged eve teasing incident is completed. The incident reportedly occurred outside the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on the night of January 18-19.

The Delhi BJP accused an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) worker and a Hindi news channel of collaborating on an alleged sting operation to tarnish the Delhi Police’s reputation. However, the operation failed due to prompt police action, leading to the arrest of the accused driver.

Praveen Shankar Kapoor, spokesperson for the Delhi BJP, wrote to Lieutenant Governor Saxena demanding Maliwal’s suspension. Kapoor highlighted that the accused, Harish Chandra Suryavanshi, is reportedly an active AAP worker, which complicates the case. He claimed that there were photographs of Suryavanshi campaigning with AAP MLA Prakash Jarwal, suggesting that the incident might be a conspiracy to portray Delhi as unsafe for women.

Kapoor urged the Lieutenant Governor to act promptly to prevent Maliwal from potentially influencing the police inquiry due to her position.

In response to video footage of the incident, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal criticized the Lieutenant Governor for focusing on this issue instead of improving city law and order. The BJP, however, described the incident as a “dirty conspiracy” orchestrated by Maliwal and the news channel to undermine the Delhi Police’s credibility.

Delhi BJP spokesperson Shazia Ilmi questioned the ethics of the sting operation and its impact on women’s safety. Another spokesperson, Harish Khurana, criticized Maliwal for her silence over the incident and expressed concern about her potential to influence the investigation due to her official position.
