Justice DY Chandrachud Warns: Supreme Court Should Not Become a ‘Tarikh Pe Tarikh’ Court
During a hearing on Friday, Supreme Court Justice DY Chandrachud expressed concern over the growing trend of lawyers repeatedly asking for adjournments. He stated firmly, “We do not want the Supreme Court to become a ‘Tarikh Pe Tarikh’ court.”
This remark came when a lawyer representing a Hindu priest in a civil appeal asked for more time to argue the case and submitted a letter seeking adjournment. The bench, comprising Justice Chandrachud and Justice Hima Kohli, refused the request and insisted that the hearing must proceed.
Justice Chandrachud emphasized that the Supreme Court is the highest court of the country, and it must uphold its dignity and efficiency. Referring to the famous line from the Hindi movie Damini, he reminded the lawyer that the court’s prestige should be respected.
“Judges read files till midnight to prepare for hearings, and then lawyers come and ask for adjournments,” he said. “If you’re not ready to argue, why file a case?”
He also pointed out the contradiction in how lawyers complain that their cases are not listed, but when they are, they seek adjournments. Justice Chandrachud urged all advocates to value the court’s time and come well-prepared.
The bench eventually paused the hearing. Later, when the lawyer returned to argue the matter, the court refused to interfere with the appeal and advised the petitioner to approach the High Court instead.
This statement by Justice Chandrachud underlines the urgent need to improve the efficiency of court proceedings and reduce unnecessary delays in the judicial system.
