Supreme Court Urges Couple With 60 Legal Cases to Seek Mediation

On April 6, Chief Justice of India NV Ramana expressed astonishment over a marital dispute case where a couple had filed 60 legal cases against each other over 41 years, including 11 years of separation.

“Some people seem to enjoy fighting. They feel restless if they don’t see the inside of a courtroom,” remarked the Chief Justice, urging the couple to consider mediation for a peaceful resolution.

Justice Hima Kohli also noted the unusual nature of the case, highlighting the creativity of the lawyers involved. “The ingenuity of the lawyers is remarkable,” she said, surprised by how frequently the couple had appeared in court.

The relationship between the couple has been strained for decades, with the wife accusing her father-in-law of sexual harassment. Despite their long-standing disputes, both parties are now open to mediation.

The Supreme Court inquired whether the wife was ready for a comprehensive settlement. Her counsel agreed but requested that ongoing high court proceedings not be paused. The bench, however, emphasized that a settlement without halting other proceedings would not be feasible.
