Supreme Court Should Not Become a “Tarikh Pe Tarikh” Court: Justice Chandrachud
On Friday, Supreme Court Justice DY Chandrachud highlighted the need to change how lawyers operate in India’s highest court. While hearing a civil appeal, Justice Chandrachud expressed displeasure over frequent requests for case adjournments. He firmly stated, “We do not want the Supreme Court to become a ‘Tarikh Pe Tarikh’ court,” referring to the famous line from the Hindi movie Damini.
Justice Chandrachud, along with Justice Hima Kohli, denied a request for adjournment from a lawyer representing a Hindu priest. The lawyer sought extra time, claiming to have submitted a letter requesting a postponement.
The bench firmly responded, “We will not adjourn the hearing. You must argue the case. The Supreme Court must maintain its dignity.”
Justice Chandrachud noted that judges often prepare case files late into the night, only for lawyers to seek adjournments the following day. He criticized this practice, saying, “Lawyers complain about cases not being listed, but when they are, they ask for delays. Court time is valuable, and we invest effort in understanding each case. Why file a case if you are not ready to argue?”
The bench refused to interfere in the appeal and directed the priest to approach the High Court.
This incident underscores the Supreme Court’s resolve to improve efficiency and maintain its reputation by discouraging unnecessary delays in legal proceedings.
