A 24-year-old man in Patiala tragically ended his life on April 15 by consuming poison, allegedly due to relentless harassment from his in-laws. According to the police, the young man, Simranjit Singh, had a love marriage with Jasmeet Kaur. However, soon after the wedding, Jasmeet’s parents took her away and began demanding ₹70 lakh as a condition for divorce.
Simranjit’s brother, Harmanpreet Singh, reported that his in-laws, Ravinder Kaur and Harmeet Singh, had pressured Simranjit to transfer his land to their daughter. When he refused, they intensified their harassment, leading Jasmeet to move back to her parental home.
Tired of the continuous harassment, Simranjit sought refuge at his cousin’s house in Ratan Nagar, Patiala. On April 13, he confided in his cousin, Harpal Singh, about his struggles, expressing a desire to end his life. Despite his cousin’s efforts to console him, Simranjit tragically took his own life early the next morning.
A suicide note was found in Simranjit’s hand, detailing the harassment he faced from his in-laws. While the police have registered a case against his mother-in-law and father-in-law, no arrests have been made yet.
