On April 15, a 24-year-old man in Patiala committed suicide by consuming poison after constant harassment from his in-laws. According to the police, Simranjit Singh had a love marriage with Jasmeet Kaur. Shortly after the marriage, her parents took her away and demanded Rs 70 lakh for a divorce.
Harmanpreet Singh, Simranjit’s brother, reported to the police that the in-laws, Ravinder Kaur and Harmeet Singh, harassed Simranjit to transfer his land to their daughter. When he refused, they took their daughter back and demanded the large sum for a divorce.
Unable to bear the harassment, Simranjit moved in with his aunt’s son, Harpal Singh, in Ratan Nagar, Patiala. On April 13, Simranjit told Harpal over the phone that his father-in-law’s harassment was unbearable and expressed his desire to commit suicide. Despite Harpal’s attempts to dissuade him, Simranjit consumed poison early in the morning on April 15.
When his family arrived, they found a note in Simranjit’s hand, explaining that he was ending his life due to the constant harassment from his in-laws. The police have named the mother-in-law and father-in-law as the accused, but no arrests have been made yet.
