Delhi Student Dies by Suicide After Alleged Police Harassment

In Delhi, a 21-year-old university student named Suraj Thakur took his own life after allegedly being harassed and tortured by the police. This tragic event occurred in March 2016. Thakur was found dead at his home in Hari Nagar, West Delhi, just hours after being questioned by police about a phone-snatching incident involving his friends.

According to Thakur’s 18-year-old brother, Neeraj, the police detained Thakur, took his phone without informing the family, and subjected him to threats and torture. After being released, Thakur went straight to his room and hanged himself.

In a video shared by his family, Thakur expressed his despair, stating he felt he had done nothing wrong and was worried about his family’s reputation. He claimed in the video that he was harassed by the police and stated, “I am committing suicide and I am responsible for this. I won’t blame anyone.”

The police have denied these allegations, asserting that they had only called Thakur in for questioning and had released him afterward. An investigation into the incident is ongoing, and appropriate legal actions will be taken, according to Gautam.

Thakur is survived by his mother, a housewife; his father, a laborer; Neeraj; and one other sibling.
