The Gauhati High Court has granted bail to Rajkanya Baruah, who was involved in a serious road accident in the Rukminigaon area of Guwahati on October 2 last year. The accident, caused by Baruah driving under the influence at around 1 am, resulted in the death of one person and injured seven others. She hit a group of workers on the road while driving recklessly.
Rajkanya Baruah had been held in Guwahati Central Jail for the past five months and had repeatedly applied for bail. On Wednesday, March 9, she was granted bail with a surety of Rs 50,000. Baruah was released from the jail at around 8 AM today.
In its order, the court noted that determining whether Baruah intended to cause harm or if the incident was accidental will depend on the evidence provided by witnesses during the trial. The court also stated that there is no risk of Baruah, being a woman, influencing witnesses or avoiding the trial. Therefore, the court believes that granting her bail will not interfere with the ongoing trial process.
