Pune Court Orders 78-Year-Old Woman to Pay Rs 25,000 Monthly Alimony to 83-Year-Old Husband
In a rare and notable decision, the Pune Family Court has ordered a 78-year-old woman to pay Rs 25,000 per month in interim alimony to her 83-year-old husband. The ruling was delivered by Family Court Judge Raghavendra Aradhye.
The couple had been married since 1964 and filed for divorce in 2019 after 55 years of marriage. The husband, who is the director of an educational institution, filed the petition. His wife, who is also the president of the same organization, was accused of mistreating him.
According to the husband, he had been facing harassment for years. He claimed that even after caring for his wife during her illness, she resumed mistreating him once she recovered. He also said that she would not allow him to eat meals at home.
The man suffers from diabetes and heart disease, and doctors have advised him to follow a strict diet and take his medication regularly. Frustrated and emotionally drained, he finally filed for divorce in 2018.
Both partners accused each other of having extra-marital affairs. The couple has two daughters who are both married.
Under Section 24 of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, a husband can claim alimony if he has no income and the wife does. Advocate Vaishali Chandne, the husband’s lawyer, said, “This case shows that not only women but also men can get justice if they are treated unfairly.”
On Friday, the court passed the final interim alimony order, directing the wife to pay Rs 25,000 monthly to support her estranged husband.
