Pune Court Orders Daughter-in-Law to Vacate House for Harassing In-Laws
In a recent ruling, a Pune court has ordered a daughter-in-law to leave her in-laws’ house after allegations of harassment. The case, filed under the Domestic Violence Act in 2022, involved the daughter-in-law accusing her husband, mother-in-law, father-in-law, and other relatives of mistreatment.
During the hearing, the court initially ordered in August 2022 that a room in the in-laws’ bungalow be allocated to the daughter-in-law. The bungalow belonged to the parents-in-law, as the woman’s husband was working in America. The court also directed that the daughter-in-law should not disturb her elderly in-laws.
Despite this order, the daughter-in-law allegedly continued to harass her in-laws, both physically and financially, by vandalizing household items. As the case progressed, the husband decided to rent a separate house for his wife. Consequently, the court ordered the husband to pay ₹25,000 per month for her rent.
Frustrated by the ongoing harassment, the in-laws filed an application to withdraw the court’s August 2022 order that allowed the daughter-in-law to stay in their bungalow. The woman, who is a doctor but not currently practicing, was accused of causing significant mental and financial distress to her elderly in-laws.
The advocate representing the in-laws argued that senior citizens deserve to live peacefully without being subjected to such ill-treatment. After hearing both sides, the court agreed and ordered the daughter-in-law to vacate the bungalow within fifteen days.
First-class court magistrate CK Shelke ruled that the daughter-in-law must leave the house owned by her parents-in-law within 15 days due to the mental and financial trouble she caused them. The court also reaffirmed that the husband must pay ₹25,000 monthly for her rent.
This decision highlights the court’s commitment to protecting the rights of senior citizens and ensuring they live in a safe and peaceful environment.
