Prithvi Shaw-Sapna Gill Selfie Controversy: What Happened So Far

Mumbai: Team India cricketer Prithvi Shaw got involved in a serious controversy after he refused to take multiple selfies with social media influencer Sapna Gill. The incident happened on the night of February 15 outside a luxury hotel in Santacruz, Mumbai.

Police said Shaw had gone to the hotel for dinner with his friend. Initially, he agreed to take selfies with Gill and her friend Shobhit Thakur, but after a few pictures, he refused to take more. This led to an argument between them.

Later, when Shaw and his friend Ashish Yadav were leaving the hotel, they noticed Thakur holding a baseball bat. Thakur allegedly broke the windshield of Shaw’s car, and Sapna Gill is accused of physically assaulting the cricketer.

According to Yadav, both Gill and Thakur appeared intoxicated and became aggressive when Shaw refused more selfies. He stated in his police complaint that the hotel manager had asked them to leave.

Shaw was moved to another car, and Yadav drove the damaged vehicle. He claimed that their car was followed by three bikes and a white car, and around 4 a.m., near a petrol pump, the attackers again smashed the car’s rear windshield with the bat.

An FIR was filed by Oshiwara Police against Sapna Gill and seven others under IPC sections for unlawful assembly (143), rioting (148), extortion (384), criminal intimidation (506), and more. Gill was arrested on February 16 and sent to police custody until February 20. Two others who followed Shaw’s car were also caught.

In court, Sapna Gill claimed that Shaw hit her on the chest and arms and even apologized, asking her not to file a police case. She also said she didn’t know Shaw was a cricketer.

Gill added, “It was my friend who asked for the selfie. I had no idea who Prithvi Shaw was. He was drunk. We were at the club, not at the hotel as claimed. The police told us to drop the matter.”

Gill’s lawyer also told the media that the allegations against her are false, and they would apply for bail in the next court hearing. He added that Section 387 (putting a person in fear of death or grievous hurt in order to commit extortion) had also been added by the police.
