Prithvi Shaw-Sapna Gill Selfie Controversy: What We Know So Far
Young Indian cricketer Prithvi Shaw is at the center of a controversy involving social media influencer Sapna Gill. The incident occurred on the night of February 15 outside a luxury hotel in Santacruz, Mumbai.
According to police, Shaw had gone to the hotel for dinner with a friend. Sapna Gill and her friend Shobhit Thakur approached Shaw for a selfie. Initially, Shaw agreed and took a few pictures. However, when they insisted on more selfies, Shaw refused, leading to an argument.
As Shaw and his friend Ashish Yadav were leaving the hotel, they encountered Thakur holding a baseball bat. Reports indicate that Thakur smashed the windshield of Shaw’s car with the bat. Additionally, there are allegations that Gill manhandled Shaw due to his refusal to take more selfies.
Yadav, Shaw’s friend and flatmate, stated that Gill and Thakur were intoxicated and started arguing with Shaw. The hotel manager asked Gill and Thakur to leave. Shaw was then moved to another car while Yadav and others drove Shaw’s vehicle to Oshiwara.
The complaint alleges that their vehicle was chased by three motorcycles and a white car. Around 4 a.m., the car was attacked near a petrol pump, where Thakur allegedly broke the rear windshield with a baseball bat.
Based on Yadav’s complaint, the Oshiwara police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Gill and seven others under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including unlawful assembly, rioting, extortion, and criminal intimidation.
Sapna Gill was arrested on February 16 and remanded to police custody until February 20. Thakur and others involved have not been traced yet, but two accused who allegedly chased Shaw’s car were arrested on February 17.
In a court hearing on February 17, Gill accused Shaw of hitting her and claimed he apologized, asking her not to file a police complaint. Gill denied all allegations, stating she didn’t know Shaw was a cricketer and claimed they were only asking for a selfie.
Gill’s lawyer asserted that the allegations by Shaw were false and expressed their intention to seek judicial custody for Gill and appeal for bail.
