Supreme Court Urges Mediation in 41-Year-Long Marital Dispute with 60 Cases
On April 6, Chief Justice NV Ramana expressed surprise over a unique marital dispute where a couple has filed 60 cases against each other over 41 years, including 11 years of separation.
“Some people like fighting. They want to be in court always. If they don’t see the court, they don’t get sleep,” remarked the Chief Justice, urging the couple to seek mediation to resolve their issues.
Justice Hima Kohli, also astonished by the frequent court visits, noted, “The ingenuity of the lawyers has to be marked.”
The relationship between the husband and wife has been strained for years. The wife accused her father-in-law of sexual harassment. Both parties now seek mediation.
The Supreme Court asked the wife’s counsel if she is open to a comprehensive settlement. The counsel agreed but requested that the proceedings before the high court not be stayed. The bench, however, clarified, “It appears you are very much interested in fighting. You can’t have both. You can’t have your cake and eat it too. Mediation is time-bound.”
The court emphasized the need for a prompt and peaceful resolution through mediation.
