Maharashtra Man Marries Twin Sisters, Faces Legal Action
In a rare incident from Maharashtra, a man from Solapur has married twin sisters from Mumbai in a joint wedding ceremony. The marriage, which took place on December 2 at a hotel in Malegaon village, has now led to legal trouble for the groom.
Why Did the Twins Marry the Same Man?
The twin sisters, both IT professionals aged 36, reportedly chose to marry the same man as they could not bear to live apart after marriage. Their families accepted their unusual request, and the wedding took place with full consent.
Videos of the wedding have gone viral on social media, showing the names of the bride and groom displayed prominently, while attendees celebrated the event.
Legal Action Against the Groom
Following the wedding, a social worker from Akluj filed a complaint with the Solapur district police. Authorities have now registered a case under IPC Section 494 (marrying again during the lifetime of a spouse) against the groom at Akluj police station.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Basavraj Shivpuje stated that since this is a non-cognizable offence, the police will seek court permission to investigate the case further.
Solapur Rural Superintendent of Police, Shirish Sardeshpande, added that initial investigations confirm that both sisters were close and wanted to stay together. Further inquiries are ongoing.
What Happens Next?
Since bigamy is illegal under Indian law unless permitted by personal laws (such as in the case of Muslims), the groom could face legal consequences if proven guilty. The case is currently under review, and authorities will determine the next steps based on their investigation.
