Man Booked After Backing Out of Suicide Pact with Lover in Prayagraj
In a dramatic turn of events similar to a movie plot, a man from Prayagraj has been booked by the police after backing out of a suicide pact with his lover at the last moment. The incident has shocked the local community.
The couple, both married to other people, were involved in a long-term extramarital relationship. Faced with pressure from society and family, they decided to end their lives together by jumping into the Yamuna river.
On May 29, the couple met on the New Yamuna Bridge. The 32-year-old woman, a mother of a six-year-old daughter, jumped into the river as planned. However, the 30-year-old man, identified as Chandu from Jhunsi, did not follow her and instead stayed back.
The woman, who knew how to swim, managed to reach the riverbank safely. Shocked and heartbroken by his betrayal, she later filed a First Information Report (FIR) against Chandu.
Backstory of the Relationship
The woman had been in a relationship with Chandu for several years. A few months ago, she moved to Pune with her daughter. During that time, Chandu got married to another woman without informing her.
When she returned to Prayagraj on May 18, the two fought over Chandu’s secret marriage. He promised to divorce his wife and marry her, but later became hesitant. After several arguments, they agreed to die by suicide.
Police Action and Current Status
According to Circle Officer Santosh Singh, a case has been registered against Chandu under attempt to murder and for damaging the woman’s mobile phone. The woman was later taken to a hospital and is now safe.
The police are currently investigating the incident, and further legal action will depend on the outcome of the inquiry.
