Couple Divorces Over Wife’s Instant Noodle Meals: The “Maggi Case”

Maggi is a popular food found in almost every home. While many love it, did you ever think it could lead to a divorce?

In a curious case, a man sought a divorce from his wife after discovering that she could only cook Maggi noodles and served it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. This unique situation has been termed the “Maggi Case.”

ML Raghunath, the principal district and sessions court judge in Mysuru, shared this story from his time as a district judge in Ballari. He explained that the man complained about his wife only buying and cooking Maggi. The couple eventually divorced by mutual consent. Judge Raghunath also noted a “drastic increase” in divorce cases recently.

“The husband said his wife did not know how to prepare any food other than Maggi noodles. It was noodles for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. He complained that his wife went to the store and brought only instant noodles,” Raghunath said.

Discussing divorce trends, Judge Raghunath mentioned receiving cases right after the wedding day. These cases often stemmed from petty issues like not talking to each other, placing salt on the wrong side of the plate, choosing the wrong color for a wedding suit, or not spending enough time together.

“Divorce cases are increasing drastically over the years. Couples have to stay together for at least a year before seeking divorce. If there was no such law, there would be divorce petitions filed directly from wedding halls,” Raghunath added.

He emphasized the court’s efforts to use emotional appeals to reconcile couples, although psychological issues often overshadow physical ones. Out of 800-900 matrimonial cases, they succeed in about 20-30 cases. In a recent Lok Adalat, only 32 out of around 110 divorce cases ended in reconciliation.

The “Maggi Case” is a unique example of how seemingly minor issues can lead to significant marital problems, highlighting the complexities of modern relationships and the increasing divorce rates.
