Ludhiana Man Sets Himself on Fire After Alleged Fake Dowry Harassment Threats

A 60-year-old man in Ludhiana set himself on fire after facing threats from his daughter-in-law over a fake dowry harassment case. The tragic event took place at his home in Guru Gobind Singh Nagar, Noorwala Road, on August 21, 2021. He succumbed to his injuries on August 23.

Reports indicate that the man’s daughter-in-law and her parents had been harassing him and threatening to accuse him of dowry harassment. According to the victim’s wife, the man was deeply humiliated and assaulted by his son’s in-laws. She added that the threats included filing a fake dowry harassment case against them.

Distressed by these threats, the man returned home, doused himself in kerosene, and set himself on fire. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he died from his injuries, as reported by Hindustan Times. The wife mentioned that their son married about a year and a half ago and they have a six-month-old daughter. She also noted that three months prior, both she and her husband were injured in an accident, after which the harassment began. Their daughter-in-law had wanted to move to separate housing, and when her request was denied, she assaulted the husband and began to harass them.

SHO Basti Jodhewal, Mohammad Jamil, stated that the accused have been charged under sections 306 (suicide) and 34 (acts done by several persons with common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Efforts are underway to arrest the accused.
