Ludhiana Man Sets Himself Ablaze After Threat of Fake Dowry Harassment Case by Daughter-in-Law

A 60-year-old man from Ludhiana allegedly set himself on fire after being threatened with a false dowry harassment case by his daughter-in-law. The tragic incident occurred on August 21, 2021, at his home in Guru Gobind Singh Nagar, Noorwala Road. He succumbed to his injuries two days later, on August 23.

Reports indicate that the man was harassed by his daughter-in-law and her parents, who threatened to falsely implicate him in a dowry harassment case. His wife revealed that he took this extreme step after being humiliated and beaten by his son’s in-laws. She further explained that the daughter-in-law wanted to live separately, but when her husband refused, the abuse escalated.

Devastated by the situation, the elderly man returned home, doused himself with kerosene, and set himself ablaze. Despite being rushed to a hospital, he could not survive the severe burns. According to the deceased’s wife, the couple had been mistreated by their daughter-in-law and her parents ever since their son’s marriage about a year and a half ago. The harassment intensified after the couple suffered injuries in an accident three months ago.

Mohammad Jamil, SHO of Basti Jodhewal, stated that the accused have been charged under sections 306 (abetment of suicide) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Authorities are actively working to apprehend the accused.
