A Mumbai metropolitan magistrate’s court has ruled that tennis star Leander Paes is responsible for domestic violence against his former partner, model and actress Rhea Pillai. The court has ordered Paes to pay Rs 50,000 in monthly rent and Rs 1 lakh in monthly maintenance to Pillai if she decides to leave their shared home.
In 2014, Pillai filed a complaint under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, claiming she was in a live-in relationship with Paes for eight years, similar to marriage. She accused Paes of verbal, emotional, and financial abuse, which caused significant emotional harm and trauma.
The court noted that, based on Paes’s own admissions, Pillai successfully proved her claims of emotional and economic abuse. It stated that the burden of proof had shifted to Paes to disprove these allegations. Instead of denying the accusations, Paes presented his own version of events, including issues like desertion, adultery, and financial disputes.
The court emphasized that the proceedings are summary in nature, requiring a lower standard of proof. It acknowledged that given Paes’s deteriorating career, ordering him to live in a rented property while paying maintenance could cause undue hardship.
