Kiren Rijiju Urges States to Establish Family Courts in Every District

Union Law and Justice Minister Kiren Rijiju has called on all states to establish family courts in each district with a population of over 10 lakh. Rijiju emphasized the sensitive nature of family court cases and the need for careful handling. He shared this during a Lok Sabha session where the Family Courts Amendment Bill was being debated.

Defending the bill, Rijiju presented data on the current state of family courts in India. As of April 31, there are 715 family courts across the country, with over 11,49,907 cases pending. Out of 773 districts in India, 69,464 new cases were registered by May.

Rijiju announced plans to review the situation at an upcoming conference on July 30, which will include all District Judges, the Chief Justice of India, and the Prime Minister. This conference will focus on critical issues concerning the judiciary, including the state of family courts.

“We recently had a conference with chief justices of all high courts and senior Supreme Court judges to discuss important matters. This upcoming conference will also address family court issues,” Rijiju stated.

He stressed that family court cases require slow, careful, and sensitive resolutions, and the government is committed to finding ways to improve this process. Rijiju also highlighted the role of technology and mediation in speeding up case resolutions. “Many family and commercial disputes can be settled through mediation. We are also introducing a Mediation Bill. Through the National Legal Services Authority, district legal aid counseling will be provided for free,” he added.
